What is a tongue tie?
A condition that occurs when the tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth is short or tight, which can limit the function of the tongue.
What are the symptoms of tongue tie?
Nipple pain or damage (creased, compressed, blanched, cracked/bleeding)
Infant seems to have a hard time staying attached to the breast Infant may be experiencing a lot of gas/fussiness
Poor weight gain
Clicking sounds while nursing
Plugged ducts/mastitis
Low milk supply
Frequent feeds, unrelated to growth spurts
Why should you get an assessment?
Breastfeeding should not be painful, and is one of the main reasons why parents stop nursing. Milk supply will decrease if infant is unable to effectively remove milk, nipple trauma can lead to infections, and infant will have a hard time gaining/maintaining weight. Who to see?
It is best to see a lactation consultant to have a complete breastfeeding assessment done before any treatment. In mild cases, the feeding can be improved with minor adjustments or oral exercises.
